Why Rent When You Can Own? (cont'd)
The birth of an in-ear rig By Jim Roese

Anyone that personally knows me is well aware that I love to talk. When Carl asked me that question, along with the offer to spend a chunk of someone else’s money, I proceeded to tell Carl my thoughts on how to do it….actually, I probably repeated it all three times until he was ready to shoot himself! After a few more miserable fly date shows, Carl called and pulled the trigger, and the rig that follows was born.

The task was this simple: Build a small footprint, 32-channel(at mic level), full-mix (to 4 independent sets of stereo ears) monitor rig that also carries a track interface, RF mic, and a full split. I did this in 1 slip-cover shock rack with a mixer on top and 8 vertical rack spaces below…..thats it.

The nucleus of the rig is a Yamaha 01V96 v2. By itself, the console is only 16 channels, 4 of which are line-level. Thinking outside the box, a MY-8AT or MY-16AT optical card can be added to the console to up the inputs to either 32 or 40 channels of input using the optical card and the internal ADAT input and output jacks on the console. I added a MY-16AT card and two banks of optical ADAT pre-amps and I was up to 28 mic level inputs.

Thinking outside the box again, I utilized Neutrik transformered inch jacks on the line level inputs of the console and VOILA, 32-channels of mic level input achieved!
